A national issue received local support and lengthy discussion on Monday night when the Hermiston City Council approved a request from the city’s Hispanic Advisory Committee to support immigration reform.

Councilors voted 7-1 to sign a letter of support as a way to urge lawmakers to make “fair and sensible” immigration laws for worthy undocumented immigrants. The letter will be also be signed by Mayor Dave Drotzmann and sent to President Barack Obama, U.S. senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley and U.S. Rep. Greg Walden.
