New apartments are coming to Hermiston early next year. 

“This will bring more rental property into Hermiston. It’s definitely a need that’s been identified, a need that’s been created by growth and job creation,” Assistant City Manager Ray Jones said Wednesday. 

New jobs in the west end of Umatilla County have created an increased demand for housing and other services, Jones said. 

“People coming in are looking for housing rentals,” he said. “We see this as a real positive in the community.”

Wednesday, Hermiston City Planner Clint Spencer signed off on the conditional site plan for phase 2 of Sterling Ridge Apartments at 1420 N.W. 11th St. The complex currently has 70 apartments in six buildings, and the expansion will add 66 units in five additional buildings to the east, directly behind the current site.

The conditional site plan includes conditions on providing adequate storm water drainage, exterior lighting and fire-related safety measures, and project officials must still obtain necessary building permits. Site preparation work could begin immediately, and construction on the Sterling Ridge project is slated to begin in January. 

“It just shows that we’re growing,” Hermiston Mayor Bob Severson said. “That’s a real good thing.”
