Holiday decorations could earn Hermiston residents $100 next month as part of a debut contest sponsored by Hermiston Sears and the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce — the Lights Before Christmas Tour.

“We’ve never done anything like this before, but if it takes off, it could become another fun community tradition,” chamber communications director Brooke Harshfield said Friday. “The community will be doing all the judging, so the winner really will be picked by the community.”

From now until Dec. 10, interested contestants can sign up at the Hermiston Chamber for $5.

Contestants will then submit a digital photo of their decorated home — which must be within city limits and on a paved road — to, and photos will be posted on the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce website after Dec. 10. Anyone in the community will be able to vote by visiting the website, and the winner will be announced at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21 on KOHU’s Odds & Ends program. The winner will receive a $100 Sears gift card.

“We’ve had a lot of people interested, but no one has decorated for Christmas yet,” Harshfield said. “We’re absolutely encouraging people to both enter and to go online and vote when the photos are posted and until the 21st. If this is successful, it will become an annual event.”
