I love reading letters to the editor. The one mentioning "... elitist professionals" was the most charming (letters, July 10). I thank the writer for engaging my interest in the Nature Conservancy, surely "... masters of perception ..."

At the conservancy Web site, they mention that 494,000 acres are under protection in Oregon. This seems like a lot, but is only 0.78 percent of the total area of Oregon.

In comparison, the Umatilla Army Depot, where nerve gas and munitions are stored, covers about 158,000 acres, or 0.25 percent of Oregon.

I would rather have land set aside to protect wildlife and scenic views than as a place to store nerve gas.
