HILLSBORO — Alice May Wood of Hillsboro died on Jan. 26 of renal failure. She was 85.

Alice was born in Irrigon on Jan. 21, 1922. She was one of six graduates in the Irrigon High School class of 1941. Alice played basketball, tennis, softball and ran track during her high school career. After graduation she moved to Paterson, Wash., then to Hermiston in 1950 and in 1966 moved to LaGrande.

After Alice married James R. Wood in 1941 and had children, she always had a job that kept her close to her children and got her home before they got out of school. She cooked for the Hermiston School District from 1950 - 1966.

Alice did all the baking at the high school and everyone loved her cinnamon rolls. They were wonderful.

Alice is survived by her son Frank Wood of Umatilla; daughters Clara Wood of Hillsboro and Jenny Berry of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brothers Clarence Frederickson of Boardman and John Frederickson of Hermiston; sister Clara West of Billings, Mont.; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren. Husband James died in 1997.

A memorial service will be held on Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Columbia View Community Church in Irrigon. A reception at Stokes Landing Senior Center will be held after the service.

Autumn Funerals and Cremations are in charge of the arrangements.
