Mary “Oleta” Akers

Feb. 15, 1916-May 19, 2001

IRRIGON — Mary “Oleta” Akers died Saturday, May 19, at her granddaughter’s home in Irrigon at the age of 85.

She was born Feb. 16, 1916, at a ranch on Butter Creek near Pine City to Edward O. and Ollie (Wattenburger) Neill. Following high school graduation at Pine City, she attended Eastern Oregon Normal School (now Eastern Oregon University) in La Grande where she received her teaching degree in 1936. Later she returned to receive her masters degree.

After teaching one year at Eight Mile, she married Wilson Dale Akers on June 1, 1937. She also taught in Hamilton, Island City and Milton-Freewater, retiring at age 65.

Oleta was a member of the Christian Church, and Alpha Xi Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma, a society for Key Women Teachers. She enjoyed her hobbies of fishing, reading, crocheting, card stamping and crafts.

But Oleta’s true love was her family.

She is survived by a son, Ed Akers of Frenchglen; daughter, Donna Narramore of Dunlap, Tenn.; sisters, Neva Neill and Lenna Hermann, both of La Grande; 15 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson “Dale” Akers; daughters, Glenna Greer and Nancy Castillo; two grandsons and two great-grandsons.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 24, at 10 a.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston. Burial will follow at Island City Cemetery at 3 p.m.
