Harold Stephen Stensrud, known to many as Deke, passed away peacefully at The Springs at Clackamas Woods on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, surrounded by his children.
Deke was born August 7, 1930, in Moorhead, Minn., to parents Henry and Lillie Stenrsud. His family moved to Oregon during his childhood, where he graduated from Astoria High School. Deke took a number of classes at Blue Mountain Community College to earn certification as an electrician.
As a career employee of Union Pacific Railroad, Deke enjoyed craftsman and handyman work both as a profession and as a personal hobby. He even designed and constructed the Hermiston home in which he and his wife Theresa lovingly raised five children. Deke, an active member of the Elks and Eagles clubs in Hermiston, also enjoyed woodworking and a number of adventures outdoors with his family.
Deke will be remembered first and foremost as an incredible dad, grandfather and friend, someone of the caliber that few experience in their lifetime. He cracked clever jokes in a not-so-obvious way, rather witty in fact. He was a talented man full of curiosity, which led to ambitious goals he always found a way to achieve due to his inventive and diligent nature. His caregivers described him perfectly as the sweetest, kindest man who put the needs of others above his own. He truly has been a gift to all who knew him, and he will live on through the many lives he touched.
Deke is preceded in death by his twin sister, Lois Haatia, and his wife, Theresa Stensrud. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Stensrud, and five children: Elaine Stensrud, Mark Stensrud (wife Cheryl), Douglas Stensrud (wife Jacqueline), Christopher Stensrud (wife Cheryl), and Stacy Simpson (husband Jason). Deke is also survived by nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Donations may be made in Deke’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association and Housecall Providers.
A graveside memorial service was held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Gresham, Oregon, on Monday, November 13, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. followed by a gathering at McMenamins Edgefield Power Station Pub.
A celebration of life will be held at the Maxwell Event Center, 145 N. First Place, Hermiston, Ore., on December 11, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. All family and friends are welcome.
