Ruth M. Olson, 89, of Hermiston passed away with her family by her side on Thursday, October 19, 2017.
Ruth was born May 8, 1928, in Airlie, Oregon, the second daughter of William and Byrda (Reece) Vogt. She grew up in Salem on a farm and attended a one-room school for eight years. She graduated from Salem High School in the Class of 1946.
She married Willard A. Olson in 1946 when he returned home from serving in the Navy after World War II. The couple moved to Portland where they made their home and raised their family. They moved to Hermiston 15 years ago to be closer to their family.
Ruth worked as a cook for the David Douglas School District and later for Loaves and Fishes. She also did volunteer work for the senior center.
Ruth enjoyed cooking, sewing, planting flowers and working in her yard. She built a three-tiered pond and several ornamental landscaping features at the age of 80.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Willard “Bill” of Hermiston; two sons, Mike (and Garnet) Olson of Pendleton and David C. (and Denise) Olson of Stanfield; daughter Shirley Ann Luthe of Hermiston; four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; brothers Vernon and Ray Vogt; and a sister, Betty Morris.
